What this ZIP means for pests

Two very different halves. The north end is old Winter Garden — the downtown along Plant Street and the streets around it. The south end is Horizon West, where whole villages of homes were built in the last fifteen years. About a fifth of the ZIP's land crosses into Lake County on the west side.

Lawns everywhere means fire ants everywhere. A ZIP of new lawns, new beds and sidewalks gives fire ants plenty of room, and their winged queens fly on warm, sunny days after rain — so a treated yard can be recolonized from the lot next door. Mounds along the sidewalk and the edge of the drive are among the most common yard calls.

Builder termite protection is recent — and it lapses. A home built in 2018 had termite protection installed at construction. Whether it is still in force depends on whether anyone renewed it. Owners who bought from the first buyer often do not know, and it is worth finding out before a swarm answers the question.

Seven homes in ten are detached, many with screened pool cages and lanais. Large roaches, spiders and ants use the gap where the cage meets the house.

Questions people ask about 34787

We bought a two-year-old house. Who has the termite paperwork? Ask the seller or the builder for the termite treatment record and any contract. Florida law also requires a notice to be posted next to the attic or crawl-space access after a termite treatment — check there.

Are fire ants dangerous to children and pets? Their stings are painful and usually leave a white pustule by the next day, and ants pour out of a disturbed mound to sting. A mound in a play area is a reasonable reason to call.

Is downtown Winter Garden different? Yes. Older homes downtown are more likely to have roof rats in the attic and termite activity in old wood, rather than the new-build problems further south.
