Mosquito control in Windermere, FL

The mosquitoes biting on a Windermere lanai in the middle of the afternoon usually were not raised in the lake. UF/IFAS finds the Asian tiger mosquito mainly in containers in suburban yards — gutters, saucers, toys, and the water held in plants like bromeliads.

Where they come from

Two container mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, are widespread in Florida, according to UF/IFAS. The Asian tiger mosquito, albopictus, turns up mostly in containers in vegetated suburban yards, and aegypti is also found in water-holding bromeliads — a common landscape plant here.

Rain sets the season. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for Orlando International Airport put yearly rainfall at about 51 inches, and June through September bring roughly 57% of it. Every storm refills every container in the yard.

What treatment involves

Finding the water. Clogged gutters, pot saucers, toys, tarps, birdbaths, bromeliads, and low spots around pool equipment. Emptying them is part of every plan.

Treating where adults rest. Shrubs, the underside of foliage, and shady spots near the house and lanai.

A schedule, not a single spray. In the wet season, mosquitoes keep coming back as long as rain keeps refilling containers.

The county's role

Orange County Mosquito Control runs public mosquito control. Residents can call 311 and ask for Mosquito Control, or email [email protected] with a name, phone number and address. A private yard service is separate from that.

Common questions

Does living on the lake mean this cannot be fixed? No. The day-biting species around homes breed in small containers, which can be found and emptied.

Will treatment hurt the pool or plants? Ask which products are used and where. Labels govern what can be applied near water and flowering plants.

How often? Ask the provider for a schedule that matches the rainy season.

Who to call

Say when the biting happens — daytime or dusk — and where: lanai, pool deck, side yard.

Seeing it right now? Call and describe it — the line can tell you whether a visit is available near your ZIP code today.

Check the license before work starts

Florida pest control businesses are licensed by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and each business location must have a certified operator in charge. Any company or individual can be looked up in the department’s public database before a visit is booked.
