Mosquitoes biting on the lanai in the afternoon

Mosquitoes that bite during the day, close to the house, are most likely Aedes — the Asian tiger mosquito or the yellow fever mosquito. UF/IFAS describes both as widespread in Florida and breeding in containers, so the source is usually within a short walk of where you are being bitten.

Why it will not stop on its own

The water is close. Clogged gutters, pot saucers, toys, tarps, the cover on the grill, a birdbath, the pocket at the center of a bromeliad. UF/IFAS notes Aedes aegypti turns up in water-holding bromeliads.

Rain refills everything. In Orlando, June through September bring more than half the year's rain. After each storm the cycle restarts.

The lake is not the main culprit. Living on the water feels like the cause, but day-biting container mosquitoes breed in small pockets of water in the yard itself.

What the visit involves

A walk around the yard to find and empty standing water, treatment of shady resting areas around the house and lanai, and a schedule for the wet season. The county's TIP and TOSS advice — tip out standing water, toss old containers — is part of the job either way.

What to say when you call

  • When the biting happens — afternoon, dusk, night
  • Where — lanai, pool deck, side yard
  • Whether you have bromeliads, gutters, or many pots
  • Whether neighbors have the same problem

Common questions

Can the county help? Orange County Mosquito Control takes requests through 311 or by email at [email protected]. Private yard service is separate.

Do citronella candles work? They may help a little near the candle. They do nothing about breeding water.

Why only some days? Mosquito numbers follow rain, with a lag of days.

Seeing it right now? Call and describe it — the line can tell you whether a visit is available near your ZIP code today.

Check the license before work starts

Florida pest control businesses are licensed by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and each business location must have a certified operator in charge. Any company or individual can be looked up in the department’s public database before a visit is booked.
